During this project I took up the task of choosing a jeweler to work with to brand on the communication pathway. I picked this store because it’s the one I felt most interested in out of the given choices and also I had the most initial ideas for first.

I enjoyed this project a fair bit and would probably say it was one of the favorites from the whole year. I liked the general concept behind it and the freedom we had but with the right amount of guidance given on the brief, for example giving a list of what to produce, but in anyway you like for any store you chose.

I like the general idea of branding and think it gives you a lot of potential to work with and experiment with different ideas and concepts.

My idea with the jewelers was to have a high street priced shop, but with the class and elegance of a high end priced shop such as Tiffany I wanted it to portray a friendly atmosphere with elegant products, therefore I chose the colour plum to work with as the company’s main colour, because I thought this enhanced a warm welcome to it but also it’s a known colour to do with class and riches, so therefore appropriate. I worked with this colour throughout all my pieces of work for this project and think it worked nicely. I did a series of posters that I thought worked every well that had a humorous element to them because they were aimed at men to buy jeweler for women, but using the typical excuse why men have to buy in the first place.

Overall I created and worked with the general ideas for what I think would work to promote and re-brand this style of company. I did enjoy the project, however if I had managed my time a little bit better I think I could have experimented more and in result to this produced better outcomes.

I thought a goody bag would be a good idea for a promotional piece to get people talking and draw people into the store. Basic style bag with the logo on the front and the purple colour that I’ve made harrington and croft use in everything. In the bag it will consist of, the flyer, a different style business card in which the hole in the ring is cut out so you can actually put it on your finger which allows people to interact, fake diamonds scattered a the bottom, a jewelry box with the logo on, a 50% off voucher with your first purchase and finally a bag of sweets. All little items that are useful or just visually appealing anyway. Excuse the quality, Tumblr has made it go strange, but created on Photo shop and Illustrator.

Here I created some general advertisements for Harrington and Croft to be placed in public areas where they will be seen for sure, such as a bus stop or billboard. As shown here, I created them on illustrator and then took them into photo shop to place them on the boards. The photography is my own throughout this project. I wanted to keep the simple theme going and to emphasize this the slogan is that also on the ads, the black and white photo keeps it as simple as possible with the colour of the company contrasting well as the logo and slogan.

Sticking with a similar theme to the rest of my pieces of work, it’s quite basic and i’ve tried to make the use of white space. These are another series of posters I created, slightly like ambient in that they are aimed towards the men of the general public. Why? Because although jewelry is for women, often men buy it for them, mainly a partner but could be for daughters or other family members too. Basically the idea behind these was using the typical things men do, and the reason why they buy jewelry. Tried to give it with a bit of a humorous approach. Just an example of what the public promotion would look like for Harrington and Croft. The ring that’s used as a symbol for the company will be placed around the Manchester area near to where there store is, in a certain manner so it becomes a regular thing and will slowly lead you where to go to find the store. It would be done using stickers that could easily be removed and that are environmental friendly. I’ve put together these two examples to give an idea how they would be placed on any surface possible. Another idea instead of stickers would be like a chalk style, which would apply better and would just wash off in the rain, so would cause permanent marks. Created on Photo shop.

Example of front store signage, and how it’d look. Created in Photoshop I used this image because, in the high street I looked in there wasn’t many jewelers that had this type of style to the shop, which I wanted for my store. I simple placed my logo onto the front after cloning the original out, and changing the colour scheme inside of the store to match my company’s.

Final

Think I’m going to use this as my final business card design, although I thought the ring idea from my previous experiments would have worked well I decided to keep it as simple as possible, so it looks elegant, quick to read and links with the rest of the pieces. Keeping the colour theme to make it a well known colour that would become associated with the store. I’ve also decided to make the simple outline of a diamond ring like a second logo, for if the company became larger that would be placed on the boxes for example, and so on. Created on Illustrator it will be printed out onto cartilage paper to give it a nice finish and textured style, rounded edges just to give it a bit more character.

Just playing about with different styles for my flyer, very brief drafts of the designs done quickly just to get an idea into my head. I think I’ll design the actual final flyer in photoshop rather than illustrator if I’m going to be using imagery as well as I’m wanting to fade a few things in and out also. Research

Looking at different styles of leaflets/flyers to get an idea of what they normally look like and consist of, often they are crammed full of text which I think is visually unappealing, and naturally we’re lazy and if we see a lot of text we won’t want to read it to so I want to keep mine to a minimum about, or at least make it visually look appealing. I think the ones with imagery and the use of white space work best and generally there’s a lot of different styles and ideas within each individual one and company.

Brochures, Circulars, and Case Studies

If you’re interested in developing promotional literature for your small business, you need to know what types of promotional literature exist and how you can use them to make more sales. Most promotional literature can be classified as a brochure, circular, case study, spec sheet, catalog, newsletter, poster, flier, envelope stuffer, annual report, or booklet. In part 1 of this 3-part series, you’ll learn about brochures, circulars, and case studies.

Brochures

A brochure is a piece of promotional literature that can do double duty as an informational piece and a sales tool. Three types of brochures make it easy for small business owners to pick and choose how they will market their businesses and make more sales. A company brochure is a brochure that gives a basic overview of a company and what kinds of products or services it offers. You can use this kind of brochure to give background information about your company, share your mission statement, and let people know about your management background. A product brochure describes one product or an entire line of products and gives information about the materials used to make products, what the products can be used for, and other information that’s important to potential buyers. Service brochures describe services that are offered by service-based companies. Some of the information included in a service brochure might be why a service is needed or how the service is performed.

Circulars

Circulars are used by retailers like grocery stores to announce special, limited-time, bargains. A circular is most often printed in color and made with newspaper stock to help it fit in with the rest of the contents of a newspaper. Circulars are usually used as inserts in local newspapers but can also be given out at stores, distributed via the mail, and handed out by door-to-door representatives. If you want to use a circular, you need to weigh the costs and benefits of using this type of promotional literature. Since sales usually only last for a few days or one week, a circular is only good for the length of the sale.

Case Studies

Case studies are very effective pieces of promotional literature, especially for service businesses that don’t have a tangible product to demonstrate to prospects. A case study is a history of how a product or service helped a customer in some way. It can show how a product helped someone save money or a service helped to improve someone’s personal life. There are several reasons that marketers continue to turn to case studies as a means of marketing products and services. One of the reasons is that people are more trusting of the data from a case study than of information contained in advertisements. This is because your customer is the one who is talking about the benefits of your products and services. Case studies are also very specific; they tell readers who had a problem and how your product or service helped to resolve that problem. People like that they can read a case study almost like a story of how your business helped someone overcome a problem. Since case studies hold reader interest, they are often more effective promotional pieces than brochures and other types of sales literature.

Similar to my billboard experiment I’ve done a similar advert so that they’d link and placed it on a bus stop, where a vast majority of the public will see it. Just an experiment so bad quality, finals will be better. Also, Tumblr has made the top design look completely different to how it does in Photoshop.

Playing around with different ideas for business cards, all of a similar style just different colours, positions and so on. The idea with the ring is that the center is cut out so you can put your finger through as if you’re wearing the ring. I’ve also decided to have it for the recognizable symbol that some business’ have as I didn’t actually have one.
